managers were fired this week in the nfl. when that happens, names of potential candidates get thrown into the ring as replacements. one of the names mentioned was skins offensive coordinator kyle shanahan. kyle has been instrumental in the rise of robert griffin, iii this season whose knee is getting better every day. he did practice fully again today, but back to kyle. he's in his third season as offensive coordinator. his success this season has him on other team's radar for head coaching positions. mike shanahan has already said none of his coaches will interview until the season is over, but when that time comes, kyle will be ready. >> yeah, definitely. i think every coach in the nfl, i think that's all of our goals. everybody wants an opportunity someday to a head coach. i hope someday i get that opportunity, very flattering to be mentioned for it now, but i did read that i wasn't allowed to, but didn't know that until you guys read it. it's not something i'm asking about. it's hard to really understand how focused and in a small world we are now as coaches. >> coming up this su

about sports and sports injuries. in the nfl especially. remember junior seau last year who took his own life. he shot himself in the chest because he wanted his brain to be studied. the doctors looked at his brain and told the family and they report this morning that his brain did test positive for chronic traumatic encephalopathy or cte repeated blows to the head and head injuries that can lead to dementia, memory loss. it is a problem that's plagued a lot of former nfl players. this is the issue that the nfl has to address when we talk about helmet to helmet blows and the sort of violent nature of the nfl. >> bill: so much evidence of this. i think dave zirin told us there are 9,000 lawsuits. phenomenal number. >> peter: one big lawsuit with several former players injuries lead -- brain injuries are leading to major problems. which leads us to this story. virginia commonwealth university did a study and looked at how we, as a nation, are doing in the health department. >> bill: this is stunning. >> peter: turns out we're not doing so great. americans die sooner and experience higher r
's what they think about junior seau seau. it showed chronic encephalopathy. most of the nfl players brains have shown this. these are people who wanted their brain studied. they are a little bit of a biased group. clearly, it is a significant issue. stage four being anger, um pu e impulsivity. >> so the knocks to his head changed his personality too? >> what we've learned from this is the only thing that can cause this problem, known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is like an alzheimer's disease that strikes young people i saw some first-hand. went to the lab where they are looking at this. that chronic traumatic encephalopathy can be caused by concussions and sub con cuss sieve hits. seau didn't have a lot of concussions but he did have a lot of hits to the head tichlts not just concussions but just repeated blows to the head over a very long career. >> how many hits to the head and you get this condition? >> we don't seem to have an absolute number. this is still relatively emerging science. a couple years ago, we weren't hardly talking about this. we do seem to know that th

card weekend. it's the opening weekend of the nfl play-offs, which is important to know because even if you are someone who does not care at all about football, you should know that the people in your life who do care about football are going to be very distracted this weekend, because there are four really good games. two on saturday, and two on sunday. it's called wildcard weekend for reasons that are mostly too boring to explain here. suffice it to say it's the first weekend of the play-offs that includes teams that did not all win their divisions, but they got into the play-offs anyway as wildcards. on the occasion of this wild card weekend in football land, the man who has decided to make himself washington's political wild card is the brand-newly retired massachusetts congressman barney frank. barney frank kicked off the weekend by going on tv this morning and said he would please like to be picked to be the new senator for massachusetts. he said he would like to be the interim replacement for john kerry, who is expected to be confirmed soon as president obama's new secretary o
